About Tend Grocery
What is Tend Grocery?
Tend is a tool that helps you pre-buy and save groceries. By pre-buying (“banking”) groceries with Tend, you can make sure your family has healthy food for next time money’s tight. And for times when you don’t have groceries in your bank, you can borrow food. By banking food with Tend you earn a 5% pre-buying credit and have access to special deals. Tend works with Walmart groceries in the Phoenix area.
How can Tend help me?
Tend helps you Save Groceries, Borrow Groceries, and Save Money.
Why Tend?: Timing payday and bills, particularly with a high bill or a low payday, is hard. Because of this, many families don’t always have the money they need to buy healthy food, particularly late in the month. Tend is a tool you can use to make sure your family always has a backup of healthy food.
Save Groceries: With Tend you can pre-buy and save food. Then, next time you need food and are low on money, you can go to the store and pick up your saved groceries using your Tend card. Tend can help you manage your grocery buying, so you can make the best choices for your family ahead of time. Plus you earn a 5% credit on pre-bought groceries.
Borrow Groceries: In times when you don’t have groceries saved in your Tend account, you can borrow a meal. Get the food you need tomorrow. Then, after your next paycheck, repay this meal and pre-buy and save an equivalent meal. Now you’re ready for next time.
Save Money: With Tend specific discounts and deals, you save money. Tend’s 5% pre-buying discount gives you credit towards your next pre-buying purchase. Tend also offers exclusive deals on products and combos we think you’ll love.
Is Tend a financial savings account?
No. Tend is for pre-buying and saving groceries like vegetables, meat, or your favorite cereal.
You can pre-buy and save items you know you’ll need to build a backup of meals. These items are “banked” in your Tend Grocery account. When you’re ready to pick up your food, go to your local Walmart and use your Tend Grocery card. Tend Grocery is a simple tool you can use to make sure your family has the healthy food they need, even when money is tight.

How do I contact Tend?
How does Saving groceries work?
To pre-buy and save a grocery, use Tend’s mobile website (https://shop.tendgrocery.com/). Search for and add groceries to your cart. Check-out and pay using your debit card to pre-buy (“bank”) these groceries. You’ll receive a text confirming the items you’ve banked.
Keep a look out for Tend text reminders and special deals.
When you bank your first item, Tend will send you a Tend Grocery card in the mail. When you’re ready to pick up your groceries, use this card to pay for your pre-bought groceries at your local Walmart.
How does Borrowing groceries work?
Get food tomorrow. Start saving groceries after your next paycheck with Tend’s “Borrow to Save.”
When you need food immediately, but don’t have groceries in your Tend Grocery account, you can borrow groceries. You get healthy food now (up to $30, no interest). After your next paycheck, repay your borrowed meal and pre-buy another meal to save.
To do this, look for the “BORROW” page on Tend Grocery. Add a $10, $20, or $30 “Borrow Credit” to your Cart. This amount will show as a credit in your cart. Add groceries to your cart and pre-buy them using this Borrow Credit. You can then use your Tend Grocery card to pick up this food the next day. If you Checkout by 4PM PST your Tend Grocery card will be updated with this food by 9AM PST the next morning. (Note: You need a Tend Grocery card to pick up your borrowed food. New users receive Tend Grocery cards in the mail – allow 7 to 10 days – after you pre-buy your first groceries.) On the 4th of next month (we schedule this to allow time for your next paycheck to come) we’ll automatically charge your debit card for twice the amount borrowed. This repays your Borrow Credit and you get a second, new Savings Credit. Use your Savings Credit to pre-buy and save groceries. (Allow 24hr for the Savings Credit to be issued.) Now you’ll have backup for next time.
Note: In order to borrow new grocery credit you’ll need to have repaid any previous Borrow Credit. Also, other types of grocery credits cannot be applied to Borrow Credits.
Use a “Borrow to Save” $20 Borrow Credit to pre-buy a dinner of chicken and broccoli. Use your Tend Grocery card to pick up the chicken and broccoli the next day. You’re able to make sure your family has a healthy dinner even when you’re waiting for your next paycheck.
Then, on the 4th of next month, your card will be charged for $40. $20 repays the borrowed chicken and broccoli dinner. Plus you get a $20 Savings Credit. You can use this to pre-buy and save another chicken and broccoli dinner. Now, when the end of the month comes you’ll know you have backup. (If you use your Savings Credit to pre-buy this dinner on the 5th, you can pick up this second chicken dinner on the 6th, but if you wait 5 days – until the 10th – then you can get the 5% pre-buying credit.)
How do I pay for groceries I pre-buy?
With a debit card, using the secure checkout on Tend’s mobile website.
How do I get pre-bought groceries out of my Tend account?
Go to your local Walmart and pay for your pre-bought items with your Tend Grocery card. You can pick up groceries pre-bought by 4PM PST the next day.
The first time you pre-buy groceries (adding them to your Tend Grocery Savings Account) we’ll mail you a Tend Grocery buying card. (Please allow 7 to 10 days to receive your card.) Use this card at your local Walmart to purchase the items you’ve pre-bought.
Your Tend Grocery card is loaded with the groceries in your Tend Grocery Savings Account (this can take up to 24hrs). This includes any price changes or tax associated with the groceries in your Tend account. Pick up the groceries in your Tend account and you can be confident your Tend Grocery card will have you covered.
(And don’t forget to take a picture of your receipt and text it to Tend to receive your 5% Pre-buy Credit on groceries you’ve saved in your Tend account over 5 days.)
How soon can I pick up the pre-bought groceries in my Tend account?
If you pre-buy groceries by 4PM PST, you can pick these up the next day.
When you pre-buy groceries they will go into your Tend Grocery Savings Account. We then process your order and load these groceries to your Tend Grocery Card. This takes up to 24hrs / overnight. If you checkout by 4PM PST your Tend Grocery card will be updated with these items by 9AM PST the next morning.
Please look for a text confirming your pre-bought groceries have been loaded to your Tend Grocery Card. As soon as you see that text, you’ll know you can go to the store and use your card to pick up your groceries.
(Note: You need a Tend Grocery card to pick up your groceries. New users will receive Tend Grocery cards in the mail after you pre-buy your first groceries – allow 7 to 10 days.)
Do I have to pick up all the food in my Tend Grocery account at one time?
No. You can pick up as many items as you’d like.
Can I use Tend Grocery at stores other than Walmart?
Currently pre-buying only works at Walmart, but if you need to, you can use your Tend card to purchase groceries at another supermarket. We are not able to apply your credit for pre-buying and any deals at other retailers.
When using your Tend Grocery card at other supermarkets, please be sure to spend only up to the total dollar value of pre-bought groceries in your Tend Grocery Savings Account. If you exceed this, the excess dollar value (the amount you went over) will be debited from your next grocery pre-purchase or the card transaction may not be processed.
Is Tend owned by Walmart?
Currently pre-buying only works at Walmart, but Tend is not owned or affiliated with Walmart. We’re working to offer pre-buying at other retailers.
Is Tend safe?
Yes. Tend payments are made through Stripe. Stripe is trusted by thousands of businesses (including Fortune 500 companies) to exceed the most stringent industry security standards. All transactions are SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protected to securely transmit your payment information. Stripe is a PCI Service Provider Level 1, which is the highest grade of payment processing security. All debit card numbers are encrypted and safely stored in Stripe’s state of the art data-center, ensuring the security of your information.
Does Tend cost anything?
Tend is completely free to use. (You do have to pay for the items you pre-buy.)
Are Tend’s pre-buying prices the same as the store?
Yes. The price you pay when pre-buying grocery items to your Tend account is the same price as at Walmart (store price as listed on Walmart’s website). For Phoenix, our reference store for prices is: Walmart Phoenix Store #2512; 1825 W Bell Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85023. (To check yourself go to https://grocery.walmart.com/ and select Pickup from this store.) Look for Tend exclusive deals, to find prices lower than at Walmart. Plus, remember you can receive a 5% pre-buying credit with Tend.
How long do the items in my account last?
They’re yours. They don’t expire.
What if I forget what’s in my account?
We’ll send you periodic text reminders so you don’t forget what items you’ve saved.
How do I remember which items I’ve pre-bought?
No need to remember. Just go to https://shop.tendgrocery.com, Log in, and look in your Savings Account to see an updated list of all items in your Tend grocery account. (When picking up, match these exact items and weights to be eligible for pre-buying credit.) You can also look at your texts. Whenever you pre-buy with Tend we’ll text you a confirmation including the items you just saved.
What if I pre-bought chicken and decide I want beef when I pick up? (item substitution)
You can use your Tend card to buy a different item of the same or lower value. However, we are not able to apply your pre-buying and deals credits for the new item.
If the new item’s value is lower we’ll issue a credit for the price difference that you can use on your next pre-buying purchase. Just text us a photo of your receipt and a note telling us the item you pre-bought and the item you substituted.
What if an item is out of stock?
No problem. When you text us your receipt please let us know what was out of stock and what you substituted it with. We’ll confirm the out of stock and your substitution. And, assuming all looks in order, apply your pre-buying discount credit to your account.
Can I get the money I’ve used to pre-buy groceries out if I need it for an emergency?
Yes. Our goal is to help your family build security, not make things harder for you. If you have an emergency text us and we’ll make sure this money’s available to you within 24hrs. We’ll be able to release the amount of money you used to pre-buy groceries (this may be different from the value of groceries shown in your account if you, for example, used a Borrow credit to pre-buy groceries.)
What happens if the item price goes up or down after I’ve banked it?
You buy items when you put them into your Tend Grocery account, so you do not lose or benefit from price changes after pre-buying an item.
If an item price has gone up from the time you pre-bought it to when you pick it up (and you’ll see this because your Tend Grocery Savings Account reflects prices at the time your pre-bought), that’s OK. Your Tend Grocery card is automatically adjusted to cover these price changes. Please make sure the items you pick up are the same items you pre-bought and use your Tend Grocery Card as normal to purchase those items at Walmart.
Can I add non-grocery items?
Tend does work with household consumables like paper towels and detergent. You can also add consumable baby products like baby food and formula. It does not work yet with durable goods like a laptop or a stroller. If you have a question on a certain item just text us to confirm whether it qualifies.
Tend does not work with age restricted products including alcohol and cigarettes.
